6/20/2023 0 Comments Austen northanger abbey![]() 3.) The French Revolution & the Napoleonic Wars. This is due to the three prominent historical events that were afflicting society: 1.) The Gothic or Medieval Period. General Tilney (Henry and Eleanor's father) invites Catherine to visit their estate, Northanger Abbey, which, because she has been reading Ann Radcliffe's gothic novel The Mysteries of Udolpho, Catherine expects to be dark, ancient and full of fantastical mystery. The plot of Northanger Abbey takes place during a time of great anxiety in Europe. Henry captivates her with his view on novels and his knowledge of history and the world. ![]() ![]() Lady Susan was outright scandalous, along the lines of Dangerous Liasons and just as edge-of-your-seat story telling as it gets Quite unlike any other Jane Austen story. She also becomes friends with Eleanor Tilney, Henry's younger sister. Northanger Abbey was delightful, witty though a bit slow in parts and slightly gloomy or rather trying to be a tad mysterious. Catherine finds herself pursued by Isabella's brother John Thorpe (Catherine's brother James's friend from university), and by Henry Tilney. Seventeen year-old Catherine spends her time visiting newly-made friends, such as Isabella Thorpe, and going to balls. Northanger Abbey follows Catherine Morland and family friends Mr. All of Austen’s novels possess a hearty degree of satirical skewering, but Northanger Abbey is the only one that is an outright satire spearing the popularity and tropes of the Gothic novel.
